AWARDING THE STARS OF THE COMMUNITIES

By Grace Chen

THE Stars – which stands for Servants To All Races – were praised for dedicating their lives to the public and keeping their neighbourhood safe in an event held in conjunction with Malaysia Day.
It was a special moment for these Stars who were policemen, doctors, council officers and residents associations heads.
Leaders from the government and private sector went on stage to receive their awards at the Friends of Honor Community Day event held at the Praise City Church in Kuala Lumpur’s Desa Tun Razak Industrial Park 17.
Among the recipients of the award were Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Christians for Peace and Harmony in Malaysia chairman Rev Wong Kim Kong and KickStart Academy director Saiful Hamiruzzaman Mohd Hazir.
Attendees included Inspector Matthew Malathambi Pilai from PDRM Cheras, Mohd Happyzam Abd Rashid from the Cheras Fire and Rescue Department, branch manager of Cheras DBKL Suffian Firdaus and National Transplant Resource Center promotion unit head Dr Yuzana Yusop.
Church pastor Aris Siew said they wanted to honour leaders whose works had given people a sense of value and dignity.
Rev Wong said to be recognised as a community leader was an honour and it was a token that could not be measured by value.
“Such a gesture of appreciation serves to encourage the recipient to further his commitment. What we have received will play on our life record. It speaks of the legacy we have laid in the community,” he said.
Rev Wong, who also gave a sermon before the awards presentation, said there should be no barriers when it came to showing love and appreciation.
“As we move towards national transformation, Malaysians must learn to look at each other positively.
“Love and forgiveness are important if we are to cultivate a positive attitude towards each other. And the right to speak should only be earned by the visibility of one’s good work,” he said.
Giving the ceremony an entertaining end was a self-defence demonstration by Saiful.
Aided by his two children Fatin, 23, and Syarif, 20, the criminologist showed the audience some nifty moves on how to deal with snatch thieves and knife-wielding assailants. But the best advice, he insisted, was to run.
“A fight avoided is a fight won,” he said.
Activities included a blood and organ donation drive and a show put up by the K9 unit. Polar Ice Cream gave the children something to cheer about by donating 500 cups of ice cream.
